When I started working on the Milwaukee Bucks timeline video and reviewing all the clips, I couldn’t help but fall in love with the 2012-2013 squad. It was the year before the franchise would change with the drafting of Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the team had a lineup full of fun characters. Monta Ellis, Tobias Harris, J.J. Redick and of course Brandon Jennings.
Brandon Jennings will forever be one of my favorites due to his amazing draft night performance back in 2009. Jennings was drafted by the Bucks with the 10th pick. But Jennings wasn’t there to walk on stage and shake the commissioner’s hand. You would think missing your draft selection would stop you from having your moment with the commissioner, but not Brandon Jennings.
With the Phoenix Suns on the clock at 14 Brandon Jennings would make his way onto the stage in a WWE style entrance. Jennings doesn’t even appear to realize the commissioner is on the stage until Stern heads over and grabs his arm. I have loved him ever since.
But back to the 2012-2013 season. Another great moment happened when Scott Skiles stepped down as head coach with the Bucks sitting at 16-16 for the season. Why did he step down? Well according to Woj it was because he hated his team. Just hated them. Well that makes one of us.
But the real highlight of the Bucks season came when the team finished with a 38-44 record and managed to secure the 8th playoff spot and the chance to go up against the Heat in the first round.
When asked about the series Jennings responded with proclaiming that the Bucks would win the series in 6. (Side note: I am going to start trying to post little videos to Instagram of funny things I find while making videos. Follow the instagram page if you would like to see more: inerdsome_yt)
They of course did not win in 6 and instead they ended up getting swept. You would think this would just go down as another embarrassing quote that is forgotten about in a few months. But the Bucks and their fans embraced the chant and it became a rallying cry of hope similar to what “Trust the Process” became for 76ers fans.
One of the funnier times the chant broke out was during their 2017 series vs the Raptors. With the Bucks up big in game 3 and well on their way to a win, their fans started chanting:
“BUCKS IN 6! BUCKS IN 6! BUCKS IN 6!”
This might seem like an odd thing to chant with the team about to take a 2-1 lead in the series as you are cheering for your team to lose one more game. Unfortunately for the Bucks they would end up losing the series in 6.
But its one of my favorite rallying cries. And as Brandon Jennings would say later:
“Bucks In Six always, that’s for the culture.”
